Having been a poor part of town, today Chueca experiences its rebirth, becoming the gay center of Madrid and the epicenter of a vibrant outdoor nightlife. Many shops and trendy bars have recently opened here.
HISTORY: Despite its central position, until the 80´s it was just a degraded district. At that time, however, the gay community began moving into apartments in Chueca. In effect over twenty years the district has been converted not only in the gay center of the capital, but also in a fasionable area full of bars and shops.
ATMOSPHERE: The area is very liberal, colorful, lively, in contrast with the architecture of the XIX century with its buildings and pedestrian streets. The heart of the district is the square from where it takes its name, Plaza de Chueca.
PLACES: Plaza de Chueca is the center of the neighborhood. It is surrounded by pedestrian streets, terraces, bars and trendy shops. It is the ideal place to have fun: cheap and offering many choices. Here it is very easy to find people who want to party.
