Essential: a breakfast in a De Bakkerswinkel
Famous for: its windows
In three words: charming, unconventional, unique
One of the main attractions of Amsterdam, one of its flags, are the windows that showcases the city. The historic center of Amsterdam includes the area that, rightly or wrongly, makes the city so well known for tourism: the red light district. Apart from its unconventional atmosphere, sometimes funny, sometimes depressing, the area is really beautiful. The city center has something magical, between canals and palaces where getting lost is easy and even more to find oneself elsewhere.
HISTORY: This is the heart of the ancient city: the neighborhood extends for several blocks and includes canals and historic buildings. Water dominates unchallenged while domesticated by man. The name itself expresses this perfectly: Amstel is the river, more Dam. It is divided basically into two areas: the old part, Nieuwmarkt, who recently became the Chinese quarter. From here begins then the famous Red Light district, with its windows, coffee shops, a liberal area very difficult to find elsewhere. The new part see in the famous Dam Square its point of reference: the style changes, it opens and celebrates the architecture of the Royal Palace, isoftened in the shopping streets all the way around until you get to the flower market.
ATMOSPHERE: The city here expresses itself in different forms from one corner to another. Lying on its one hundred thousand channels, more than ever is a dance between the elegant streets, with an northern European order, and chaotic streets that are home to the smells and the fragments of lives typically local; the life inside and outside the coffee shop, tourists always recognizable, rapid people cycling. Amsterdam, basically, changes a lot depending on how you look at it. It is true in a neighborhood like this, with so many different input that can elicit the most diverse feelings: no doubt, to know the city, the center is the ideal place to settle in an apartment Amsterdam.
PLACES: The Waterlooplein and the Flowers Market are two spots for lovers of markets: unique for the variety and location float! If you like curious museums and realted with the city topics, do not miss the Museum of Sex and the Museum of Marijuana. More traditional are the Wax Museum and the Historical Museum of Amsterdam. And then, of course, Dam Square, Royal Palace, Rembrandt Square, the Red Light District.
