KurfürstendammThe world-famous Kurfürstendamm, for locals (Berliner) simply known as "Ku'damm", is Berlin's most popular shopping street and promenade; it's Berlin's answer to London's Oxford St. This beautiful tree lined boulevard is packed with fancy shops and cafes, department stores, specialist shops and elegant boutiques. Numerous travel agencies, hotels, restaurants (some with terraces and winter gardens), bars, cinemas and theatres attract large numbers of people in quest of entertainment or relaxation. It is after midnight before there is any marked lull in the traffic and streams of people.

At the centre of the avenue stands the Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church that suffered severe bombing during WW II. It has been left in ruins as a memory of the past. The magnificent department store KaDeWe would rival Harrods or Bloomingdale's with its crystal chandeliers, famous designers and scrumptious food hall, serving everything from champagne breakfasts to Marmite for all those homesick Berlin Brits.

The area bounded by Kurfürstendamm, Budapester Straße and Tauentzien is second only to Alexanderplatz as Berlin's most important urban center.
