Barcelona is a fascinating city and there are many things to see. Here is a list of some of Barcelona's most popular sights.
With its red color, its contrasts visible from every part of the city, Brunelleschi's dome is a symbol of Florence, his most precious heart recognizable from the hills all around and from the most famous panoramic spots.
Santa Maria del Fiore, or simply the Duomo, is one of the largest and most famous cathedrals in Europe, whose construction began with Arnolfo di Cambio in the thirteenth century. It took almost a century to complete the work: so maybe the end result should be quite different from the initial project by the architect.
During the Renaissance, with an already built structure and a clear idea of what the Cathedral would have been, Brunelleschi was uncharged of the project of the Dome, long remained a mystery for its incredible architecture.
This famous dome of Brunelleschi was for centuries an object of study and interest for architects and scholars.
With a diameter of 46 meters and a height of over 114 meters, Brunelleschi designed a dome with an octagonal base and self-supporting thanks to a fishbone structure, inspired to Roman temples (Pantheon).
You can go up to visit and enjoy a breathtaking view from above. Another viewpoint is offered from the top of the Giotto Tower, the bell tower of the cathedral, 84 meters high.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is impressive and completely covered with colored marble: its extraordinary marble facade is typical from various parts of Tuscany, with recognizable tones of white Carrara, green Prato and red Maremma marbles.
Just opposite the main facade of the cathedral, on the Piazza del Duomo, is another structure of extraordinary historical and artistic interest: the Baptistery. Its origin dates back to 1000-1200, when it was born as a baptismal font for the Cathedral. With an octagonal base covered by a large dome and decorated in colored marble, the Baptistery is famous for its unique bronze doors decorated by Andrea Pisano and Lorenzo Ghiberti.
