Berlin city guide

How to get around

As Berlin is a huge city, its transport services are very well developed so you can make use of bus, tram, train or subway to move around. An interconnected three-zone system (ABC) which only demands one ticket permits you to hop from bus to underground (U-Bahn) to surface rail (S-Bahn) and tram.

Taxi services are also easy to use and a bit less expensive than in many other big central European cities. You can hail a cab, or find a taxi rank (Taxistand). But you can also take your car or ride a bike.

Public Transport (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus, tram)

Berlin is divided into 3 transport zones A, B and C but for most travel purposes A and B will be sufficient.

Prices

One way tickets (€ 2.70/ person for tariff zone AB) are valid for any travel within two hours of validation, in a single direction, within the appropriate fare zones. There is no limit to transfers.

Berlin Welcome Card

This card offers a good package for combined transport and museum entry tickets.

Taxi

Taxis in Berlin are affordable, but as the public transportation network is very developed, you probably won’t necessarily need to step in a taxi. However, if you have to, take solace in the fact that you can get from the center of Berlin to Tegel by taxi for less than €20.

Taxis are numerous and accessible almost all the time. Taxi stands can be located at all main stations, airports and hotels. Most Berlin taxi drivers speak English, but don't take it for granted.

Car

You will soon get the hang of driving in Berlin with its wide, long avenues and main roads and civilized traffic. If you did not come by your own car, there are several car rentals in the city. Right of way is to traffic coming from the right - a diamond shaped yellow sign means you have right of way.

Bike

Berlin has no steep hills and offers many bicycle paths (Radwege) throughout the city.

Bicycles are a very popular method of transportation among Berlin residents, and there is almost always a certain level of bicycle traffic. Bicycle rentals are available in the city, although the prices vary. In addition there are also many public bicycles.

You are also permitted to take your bicycle on the U- and S-Bahn, but you have to buy the appropriate ticket.

If you are not familiar with searching your own way through the city or you want more explanation of the sights you visit, you can get guided bike tours (with bike included).
