FIESOLE
Fiesole, some 6 km from Florence, is a small village enclosed by a 300 metre high wall from which you can enjoy beautiful views over the city. You can visit the city centre which offers you culture & history. Situated to the north of the city you can get here in 20 minutes from Campo di Marte by bus nº 7.
In Fiesole, you can admire the Roman theatre, spa, Roman-Etruscan ruins, the doorway of an Etruscan tomb from the 3rd century, a tomb from the barbaric invasion era, remains of inscriptions, decorated pilars and architectural drawings.
The theatre takes advantage of the natural slope of the ground, just as the Greeks, and maintains well conserved lower levels which are still used in the summer for opera shows.
As well as the Etruscan & Roman momuments, in Fiesole you can visit churches and houses dating from the medieval era and the renaissance. From Fiesole’s square you can go up to the Monastery of San Francesco, a charming place with a terrace which offers panoramic views over Florence. Below, on the road which goes to Florence, you can find another Monastery, ‘San Domenico’ which houses a Brunelleschi monument. You must also take a walk down the Via Vecchia Fiesolana, one of the most beautiful streets in the Tuscan hills with pretty landscapes.
