The royal palace

The royal palace

While the Palace serves as the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, it is not their primary living space.

Here are some key features and reasons to visit:

Architectural Grandeur: The palace is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, boasting stunning facades, intricate details, and opulent interiors. Its vast size and harmonious design are truly impressive.

Historical Significance:  The roots of this historic building stretch back to the 9th century when it was originally built by the Islamic kingdom of Toledo.  Later, it was occupied by the kings of Castile.  In 1734, a fire completely destroyed the old structure, and King Felipe V immediately ordered a new one built on the same site. This is the palace we see today.

Opulent Interiors:  Explore lavishly decorated rooms, including the Throne Room, Royal Armory, and Royal Pharmacy. Admire exquisite furnishings, artwork, and tapestries that reflect centuries of royal history.

Changing of the Guard: Witness the impressive Changing of the Guard ceremony, a traditional display of military precision and pageantry.

Stunning Views: Enjoy panoramic views of the city from the palace grounds, including the Sabatini Gardens and Campo del Moro.

Art Collection:  The palace houses a remarkable collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Goya, and Velázquez.

The palace is open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of Spanish royalty and a chance to admire its architectural splendor and artistic treasures. Visitors can witness important state ceremonies that still take place within its historic walls.
