Templo de debod. Madrid

Templo de debod. Madrid

History and Origins

Originally built in the 2nd century BC in southern Egypt (near Aswan), the temple was dedicated to the gods Amun and Isis. When the Aswan High Dam was constructed, many ancient monuments were threatened with flooding. As a gesture of gratitude for Spain's help in saving other temples, Egypt gifted the Temple of Debod to Spain in 1968. It took years to carefully dismantle, transport, and reconstruct the temple in its current location in Parque del Oeste. It was opened to the public in 1972.
